Booking, quoting, warranty, standards and the faults that come up most often. If something is not here, ring and ask.
Quick answer
Does aftermarket auto electrical work void a new car warranty in Australia?
No. Under the Australian Consumer Law a manufacturer cannot void a vehicle warranty simply because work was carried out away from a dealership; they can only decline a claim for a fault the work actually caused. Wired Right uses vehicle-specific harnesses, fuses within 300 mm of the power source, and avoids cutting factory looms so there is nothing for a dealer to point at.
Booking and the workshop
Do I need to book, or can I turn up?
Book where you can. Auto electrical work is time-based rather than parts-based, so a job needs a slot on the board and a hoist. Ring 0410 289 658 and we will give you the earliest realistic time rather than the earliest optimistic one.
Where are you located?
The workshop is in Albion Park Rail NSW 2527, in the light industrial pocket near Illawarra Regional Airport. It is a fixed workshop, not a mobile-only service.
What are your hours?
Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Weekends are by appointment only, so ring during the week to arrange a Saturday or Sunday slot. Weekend appointments fill first, so book ahead where you can.
Do you do mobile call-outs?
The service is workshop-based. Electrical faults are found by leaving a vehicle connected to test equipment and reproducing the fault, which is not something that works well in a driveway. If a vehicle cannot be driven, we can advise on the best way to get it in.
How far do you travel for customers?
Customers come from across the Illawarra, Albion Park, Shellharbour, Oak Flats, Warilla, Barrack Heights, Shell Cove, Flinders, Dapto, Wollongong, Kiama and Jamberoo. Everything is done at the workshop.
Costs, quotes and diagnosis
Why is diagnosis charged separately from the repair?
Because a fault code names a circuit, not a broken part. Finding the actual fault takes measurement, time and equipment, and it is the step that stops you paying for parts that were never the problem. You are told the diagnosis cost before it starts.
Will you quote before doing the work?
Always. Once the fault is confirmed you get the cause, the fix and the price before anything else happens. Nothing is done on the assumption you would probably want it.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
For straightforward supply-and-fit items, often yes. For a fault, a warning light, a no-start, an intermittent problem, a phone price would be a guess, and guesses are how people end up paying for the wrong part twice.
Do you supply parts, or can I bring my own?
Both work. If you supply the part, the workmanship is still warranted but the part itself is your responsibility. We will tell you honestly if a part you have bought is not suited to the vehicle before it goes in.
Warranty, insurance and standards
Will aftermarket electrical work void my new car warranty?
No. Under the Australian Consumer Law a manufacturer cannot void your warranty simply because work was done outside a dealership. They can only decline a claim for a fault the work actually caused, which is why we use vehicle-specific harnesses, fuse at the source and avoid cutting factory looms.
What is a Motor Vehicle Tradesperson Certificate?
It is a NSW Fair Trading certificate issued under the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act 2013 that specifies which classes of repair work a tradesperson is authorised to carry out. Wired Right holds certificate MVTC157567, and any customer can verify a certificate through Service NSW.
Do you work to Australian Standards?
Where a standard applies, yes, and we will tell you which one. Caravan and RV 12 volt work is done to AS/NZS 3001.2, forward-facing lamps are wired to Transport for NSW VSI-64, and aftermarket immobilisers are fitted to AS/NZS 4601 specification.
Will an install affect my insurance?
Insurers care about two things: whether a modification was declared, and whether it was done competently. Declare accessory installs to your insurer, and keep the job card. Correct fusing and no cut factory wiring is what makes a claim straightforward.
Common faults
Is it my battery or my alternator?
A healthy battery rests at 12.6 to 12.8 volts. A working charging system delivers 13.8 to 14.8 volts at idle on a conventional alternator. Testing both under load separates them in a few minutes, which is far cheaper than replacing one and finding out.
Why does my car go flat after sitting for a few days?
A parasitic drain. Once all modules are asleep, total draw should be under about 50 milliamps. Above that, something is staying awake, commonly an aftermarket dash cam, alarm, tracker or amplifier wired to a permanent live.
My check engine light is on. Is that electrical?
It might be. A code identifies a circuit that is out of range, and the cause is as often wiring, a connector or an earth as it is the component named. We test the circuit before condemning the part.
Can you fix an install someone else did?
Regularly, and it is a large part of the work. Scotch-locked taps, unfused power cables, amplifiers earthed to painted panels and alarms wired into safety circuits are all correctable, usually without starting from scratch.
Question not answered?
Ring the workshop and ask
We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have someone book the wrong job or fit something that gets defected.
