Quick answer

What does hardwiring a dash cam involve?

Hardwiring a dash cam replaces the cigarette-lighter plug with a permanent connection to the fuse box using a fused add-a-circuit, giving one switched feed, one constant feed for parking mode and a chassis earth. Wired Right in Albion Park Rail routes the cable behind the headlining and A-pillar trim, keeping clear of curtain airbags, and sets a low-voltage cut-off so parking mode cannot flatten the battery.

A camera is only as good as the wiring behind it. Suction mounts fall in summer heat, plug-in dash cams stop recording when the accessory socket cuts out, and a reversing camera spliced into a reverse light with a scotch-lock will flicker within a year of Illawarra coastal air getting to it.

We hardwire. Cables run inside the trim, cameras earth to bare metal, and every permanent-live feed is fused and voltage-protected so a parking mode recording session cannot leave you with a flat battery on Monday morning.

That extends to towing setups, caravan and trailer cameras, second-screen wiring, and reversing systems that switch automatically when the trailer is connected.

The camera feed is a low-voltage signal, so it runs shielded and away from the power loom. Cameras that flicker or go black after a stereo upgrade are almost always a routing problem.

What this covers

  • Reverse, front, side & 360° camera systems

Integrated into the factory screen where possible, or supplied with a dedicated monitor where it is not.

  • Caravan & trailer camera setups

Wired or digital wireless systems that switch automatically with the trailer plug, sized for the length of the van.

  • Dash cams: front, rear and parking mode

Hardwired with a three-wire kit, low-voltage cut-off set, and cabling hidden completely behind trim.

  • Camera fault diagnosis & repair

Flickering, black screens and intermittent images traced to the connector, earth or trigger circuit rather than replacing the camera first.

  • Parking sensor installation & repair

Front and rear sensor sets fitted at the correct height and spacing, with the bumper marked out before anything is drilled.

  • Blind spot monitoring systems

Radar-based systems calibrated for the vehicle width, with mirror or A-pillar indicators.

  • Digital rear-view mirror upgrades

Streaming mirrors wired for both mirror and camera modes, with the factory mirror harness retained where fitted.

How the job runs

  1. 1

Plan the run before the trim comes off

We map the cable path around airbag curtains and known clip points so nothing is drilled or forced.

  2. 2

    Fuse the feeds correctly

Add-a-circuit fuse taps, one switched and one constant, sized for the device and never piggy-backed on a safety circuit.

  3. 3

    Protect the battery

Low-voltage cut-off set so parking mode stops recording before the battery drops below a safe cranking voltage.

  4. 4

    Seal and strain-relieve

Exterior camera entries grommeted and sealed, cable looms secured so vibration cannot chafe them.

  5. 5

    Set it up with you

Resolution, loop length, parking sensitivity and app pairing configured before you leave, not left in the box.

Cameras & Driver Assistance: common questions

Will a dash cam in parking mode flatten my battery?

Not with a hardwire kit that has a low-voltage cut-off. The kit monitors battery voltage and stops recording at a set threshold, typically 11.8 to 12.0 volts, leaving enough charge to start the engine. Cheap plug-in setups without that protection are the ones that cause problems.

Can a reversing camera be added to my factory screen?

In most vehicles from about 2012 onwards, yes, using a video interface that talks to the factory head unit. Where the factory screen will not accept a video input, a discreet dedicated monitor or a digital rear-view mirror gives the same result without cutting the dash.

Do you fit cameras to caravans and trailers?

Yes. Wired systems give the most reliable picture over a long van, and digital wireless systems suit setups you swap between vehicles. Either way the trigger is wired so the display changes automatically when the trailer plug is connected.

Are parking sensors worth fitting to an older car?

They are one of the cheapest safety upgrades available, and for vehicles with high tailgates or towbars they remove the blind zone directly behind the bumper. We mark and drill to the manufacturer height and spacing so false triggers are minimised.

Why has my reversing camera gone black or flickery?

Usually the camera earth or the connector at the tailgate loom, both of which sit in the wettest part of the vehicle. It is worth diagnosing before buying a replacement camera, because the camera itself is often fine.
