Quick answer
What is involved in rewiring a classic car?
A full classic rewire replaces the entire loom with a new fused harness, typically 12 to 22 circuits, built around a modern relay and fuse panel instead of running high current through dash switches. Wired Right in Albion Park Rail builds each loom to the vehicle, labels every circuit, and supplies a wiring diagram so the car can be serviced by anyone afterwards.
Sixty-year-old wiring is not just brittle, it was under-specified when it was new. Original looms ran headlights through the dash switch, earthed through painted bodywork, and protected entire systems with a single fuse. The result is a car that runs hot, dims at idle and occasionally sets fire to itself.
A custom loom fixes the design, not just the wire. Relays carry the current, switches carry only signal, every circuit has its own fuse, and the whole thing is built to a diagram rather than reverse-engineered from what happened to be there.
The same approach applies to engine conversions, motorsport builds and one-off vehicles: work out the circuits, build the harness on a board, label it, install it, and hand over documentation that means the next person is not starting from zero.

What this covers
Classic car rewiring & restoration
Complete new looms built to suit the vehicle, with modern fusing and relays hidden behind an original-looking dash.
Hot rod & custom build electrics
Wiring designed around the build: hidden switching, remote fuse panels, custom lighting and starting systems.
Engine conversion wiring harnesses
Donor engine looms stripped, re-pinned and integrated with the recipient vehicle, including immobiliser and gauge signals.
Fuse & relay panel fabrication
Purpose-built panels with labelled circuits, accessible mounting and room to expand.
Motorsport electrical systems
Simplified, weight-conscious looms with battery isolation, kill switches and clear circuit separation.
Custom switch panels & controls
Machined or moulded panels with backlit labelling, wired through relays for switch longevity.
Full vehicle electrical redesigns
Where a vehicle has been modified over decades, the whole system is redesigned and rebuilt to one plan.
Complete custom electrical fit-outs
Ground-up electrical for one-off and purpose-built vehicles, documented end to end.
How the job runs
- 1
Draw the circuits first
Every custom job starts as a diagram. Loads, fuse ratings, relay logic and cable gauges are decided on paper before anything is cut.
- 2
Build the harness on a board
Looms are laid out and built off the vehicle where possible, which gives cleaner routing and shorter time off the road.
- 3
Relay the current, signal the switch
Switches carry signal only. Relays carry load. That single change fixes most classic electrical failures permanently.
- 4
Label everything
Circuit numbers on the wire, labels on the fuse panel, and a legend that matches the diagram.
- 5
Commission circuit by circuit
Each circuit is energised and tested individually rather than turning the key and hoping.
Custom Electrical Work: common questions
How long does a full classic car rewire take?
It depends on how much of the car is apart and how many circuits it needs, but a complete rewire is measured in days of workshop time rather than hours. The honest answer comes after an inspection. We would rather quote what it is than quote what sounds good.
Can you keep the car looking original?
Yes. Cloth-braided cable, period-correct terminals and original switchgear can all be retained while the fuse and relay panel lives out of sight. The car looks untouched and behaves like a modern vehicle electrically.
Do you do engine conversion looms?
Yes. LS, Barra, Japanese and European conversions are all included. The donor loom is stripped back to the circuits the engine actually needs, re-pinned, and integrated with the recipient vehicle’s ignition, gauges and immobiliser requirements.
Why does my classic dim its headlights at idle?
Because the original design runs full headlight current through the dash switch and earths through the body. Voltage drop across those two paths can exceed a volt. Moving the load onto relays and running dedicated earths typically restores full brightness without touching the alternator.
Will I get a wiring diagram?
Always, on any custom work. A loom without documentation is a problem you have handed to your future self. Every circuit is numbered on the wire and matched to a legend at the fuse panel.
