What is the difference between a car alarm and an immobiliser?
An alarm detects intrusion and makes noise to draw attention; an immobiliser is designed to stop the engine starting by interrupting a circuit it needs. A GPS tracker is different again: it reports the vehicle’s location but does not stop it being driven. Security & Vehicle Protection: common questions
My car already has a factory immobiliser. Do I need anything else?
A factory immobiliser is designed to stop the engine starting without a recognised key. It does not stop someone who has your key, and keyless vehicles can be targeted with relay attacks. An aftermarket immobiliser or alarm can add another layer, and a GPS tracker can help locate a vehicle after it is taken, but they do different jobs and none of them prevents every theft. We can talk through what suits your vehicle.
Why does my alarm go off at random?
Possible causes include a faulty bonnet or door switch, a sensor set too sensitive, a weak battery or a wiring fault. Some of these can be fixed by repair or adjustment, but if the alarm unit itself has failed it may need replacing or removing. We test to find out before recommending either.
Can you remove an old aftermarket alarm?
Yes. Old aftermarket systems can cause battery drain and intermittent no-start faults as they age. We remove the module, restore the affected factory circuits and check the battery drain afterwards.
Is a GPS tracker worth fitting?
It depends on the vehicle and what you want it to do. A hardwired tracker can report location and movement without relying on a separate battery being charged. It does not stop the vehicle being driven, so it is not a substitute for an immobiliser. Options depend on the vehicle and product, and some trackers carry ongoing subscription costs set by the provider.
Do you fit remote start or keyless entry?
On selected jobs only, subject to the vehicle. Remote start needs safety interlocks and is not suitable for every vehicle or transmission. Keyless and proximity entry upgrades also depend on the vehicle and product. We will confirm whether it suits your vehicle before you buy a kit.
