Car Audio Installation & Sound System Builds

CarPlay and Android Auto head units, speaker and amplifier upgrades, DSP tuning, sound deadening and full custom builds, wired by an auto electrician, not a box-fitter.

The numbers

Main power fuse distance from battery
Within 300 mm
Typical amplifier earth length
Under 500 mm to bare chassis metal
Signal and power cable routing
Opposite sides of the vehicle
Factory features retained
Steering controls, camera, sensors, chimes
Gain setting method
Oscilloscope, not by ear

Quick answer

What is involved in a professional car audio installation?

A professional car audio installation replaces or supplements the factory system while keeping the vehicle electrically standard. Wired Right in Albion Park Rail uses vehicle-specific harnesses, retains steering wheel controls and factory features, fuses amplifier power within 300 mm of the battery, and sets gains with an oscilloscope rather than by ear so the system plays clean at full output.

Most car audio complaints are not speaker complaints. Alternator whine, a subwoofer that cuts out at volume, a head unit that resets when you start the car, a reversing camera that stopped working after a stereo upgrade. Every one of those is an electrical fault, and every one of them is avoidable.

Wired Right approaches audio the same way it approaches a wiring repair: correct cable gauge, fusing at the source, clean earths to bare metal, and signal separated from power. The result is a system that sounds the way it should and does not create a new fault three months later.

That covers everything from a straight CarPlay head unit swap in a work ute to a fully tuned, DSP-controlled build with a custom-fabricated sub enclosure and amp rack.

Signal and power run down opposite sides of the car and never share a loom. That one decision is the difference between a clean install and alternator whine you can never quite tune out.

What this covers

  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto head unit upgrades

Wired and wireless units fitted with vehicle-specific fascia kits and harnesses so the dash still looks factory.

  • Factory stereo upgrades & OEM integration

Keep the original screen and controls while adding amplification and better speakers through a high-level or digital interface.

  • Speakers, subs, amps & component upgrades

Correctly powered and impedance-matched, with baffles and adapters made to suit the door rather than forced in.

  • DSP tuning for premium sound quality

Time alignment, crossovers and equalisation set per seat with measurement, not presets.

  • Sound deadening installation

Butyl mats on the outer skin, closed-cell foam decoupling, and sealed door barriers so the door behaves like an enclosure.

  • Custom subwoofer boxes & amp mounting

Enclosures built to the driver’s specified volume and tuning, mounted so cargo space and factory tie-downs still work.

  • Steering wheel controls & factory feature retention

Steering controls, reversing camera, parking sensors, chimes and factory amplifiers all retained.

  • Audio fault finding & noise removal

Alternator whine, ground loops, engine tick and RF interference traced and eliminated at the source.

  • Full custom sound system builds

Design, power budget, fabrication, install and tune, documented end to end.

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Listen to the car first

We check what the factory system actually does, active crossovers, factory amplifiers and CAN-controlled volume all change the right approach.

  2. 2

    Design to a power budget

Amplifier draw is compared against real alternator output so the system never browns out the vehicle at idle.

  3. 3

    Wire it like an electrician

Correct-gauge power cable, fuse within 300 mm of the battery, grommeted firewall pass-through, RCA runs separated from power.

  4. 4

    Fabricate, do not force

Speaker adapters, baffles and enclosures made to fit the vehicle so nothing rattles and nothing is cut that should not be.

  5. 5

    Measure and tune

Gains set by scope, crossovers and time alignment set by measurement, then a final listen with your own music.

Car Audio & Sound Systems: common questions

Will a new head unit break my reversing camera or steering wheel controls?

Not when the right interface is used. Vehicle-specific harnesses and control interfaces retain steering wheel buttons, the factory reversing camera, parking sensor chimes and warning tones. Problems appear when a generic harness is used and those signals are simply not connected.

Can I get wireless Apple CarPlay in an older car?

Yes. Most vehicles from the mid-2000s onwards can take an aftermarket head unit with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, using a fascia kit and harness made for that model. Vehicles with factory screens and CAN-controlled climate usually need an integration module rather than a full replacement.

Why does my subwoofer cut out when the bass hits?

That is almost always protection mode caused by voltage sag, an undersized power cable, a poor earth or a gain set too high. It is an electrical problem, not an amplifier fault, and it is fixed by correcting the cable gauge, the earth and the gain structure.

What is a whining noise that changes with engine revs?

Alternator whine, caused by a ground loop between the head unit and the amplifier or by RCA cables running alongside power cable. It is resolved by re-earthing to a single point and re-routing the signal cables, not by adding a noise filter over the top.

Do I need sound deadening?

If you are upgrading door speakers, it makes more difference than a bigger speaker does. An untreated door panel resonates and leaks back-wave, which cancels mid-bass. Treating the outer skin and sealing the inner door is the cheapest real improvement in most builds.

Can you build a system that still leaves my boot usable?

Yes. Under-floor and side-panel enclosures, false floors and amp racks mounted to the spare wheel well all keep cargo space. We design around how you actually use the vehicle.
