Quick answer
How do driving lights have to be wired to be legal in NSW?
Under Transport for NSW Vehicle Standards Information 64, a vehicle may have a maximum of four driving lamps, fitted symmetrically at or above headlamp height, emitting white light only. They must be wired so they operate only with high beam and switch off automatically when high beam is switched off. Wired Right in Albion Park Rail wires every set to that standard.
Lighting is the most commonly failed area at a roadside inspection, and almost always because of how the lamps were wired rather than the lamps themselves. A light bar tied into the parking lights, spotties on a separate switch that works on low beam, a "9 to 5" LED headlight globe that scatters glare into oncoming traffic, all of them are defect notices waiting to happen.
We wire forward-facing lamps through their own relay and fuse, triggered from high beam, with an in-cabin switch that can turn them off but cannot turn them on independently of high beam. That is what VSI-64 requires and it is also what stops your high-beam circuit from carrying current it was never designed for.
Beyond the front of the vehicle: canopy and tray work lights, reverse light upgrades, interior lighting, and repairs to the tail, brake and indicator circuits that fail every time a trailer plug corrodes.

What this covers
Headlight repairs, upgrades & LED conversions
Correct beam pattern and cut-off retained, with load resistors or CAN decoders where the vehicle monitors globe current.
Driving lights, light bars & spotlights
Relay-driven, fused at the battery, triggered from high beam, mounted symmetrically to VSI-64.
Fog lights & daytime running light installations
Wired to the correct trigger source so fogs are independent of high beam and DRLs dim with the parkers.
Tail, brake, indicator & reverse light repairs
Earth and connector faults traced properly, these circuits fail at the terminal far more often than at the globe.
Work lights for canopies, trays and interiors
Switched, fused and mounted so they cannot be left on to flatten the battery, with rear-facing lamps interlocked as required.
Trailer & caravan lighting repairs and upgrades
Full 7-pin and 12-pin rewires, LED conversion, and earth repairs at the drawbar where most trailer faults begin.
How the job runs
- 1
Check what the vehicle can carry
LED conversions and extra lamps change circuit load. We check the existing circuit before adding to it.
- 2
Mount to the standard
Height, symmetry and colour checked against VSI-64 so the vehicle stays compliant.
- 3
Relay and fuse at the source
Power taken from the battery through a correctly sized fuse and relay, with the trigger taken from high beam.
- 4
Aim and test at night
Beam pattern checked against a wall and, where practical, on the road so the light lands where it is useful.
- 5
Explain what is legal
You leave knowing when the lamps can be used and when they must be off: under street lighting, or within 200 m of a vehicle ahead or oncoming.
Vehicle Lighting & LED Upgrades: common questions
Are light bars legal in NSW?
A light bar is legal if it is fitted and wired as a driving lamp: white light, mounted at or above headlamp height, no more than four driving lamps in total, and wired so it only operates with high beam and switches off with it. Roof mounting is permitted but not recommended, because reflection off the bonnet reduces its usefulness.
Can I fit LED globes into my factory halogen headlights?
It depends on the housing. A reflector designed for a halogen filament will not focus an LED emitter the same way, which usually produces glare rather than distance. We check the beam pattern and cut-off after fitting and will tell you honestly if a particular globe makes your headlights worse.
Why do my trailer lights work sometimes?
Trailer lighting circuits earth through the plug and the drawbar, and both corrode. The usual fix is a fresh earth from the trailer chassis to the plug, new terminals in the socket, and dielectric grease. It is a small job that solves the majority of intermittent trailer light complaints.
Will extra lights flatten my battery?
Not if they are wired through an ignition-controlled relay, which is how we fit them. The risk comes from lamps wired directly to a permanent live with a dash switch that can be left on overnight.
Do driving lights need their own switch inside the car?
Yes, and that switch must be able to turn them off while high beam is on. It must not be able to turn them on when high beam is off. That is why a simple two-position switch on a permanent live does not comply.
