What are the NSW rules for driving lights?
Transport for NSW Vehicle Standards Information 64 (VSI 64) allows a maximum of four driving lamps, emitting white light, fitted in pairs or as a single lamp at the front. A mounting height is not specified, but the light must not reflect off the vehicle into the driver’s eyes. Driving lamps must switch off when high beam is switched off. Driving lights, light bars, LED upgrades and work lights add load to a vehicle’s electrical system, and how they are wired matters as much as the lamps themselves. Forward-facing driving lamps are wired through their own relay and fuse, triggered from high beam, so they switch off when high beam is switched off.
Beyond the front of the vehicle, the work covers canopy and tray work lights, reverse light upgrades, interior lighting, and repairs to tail, brake and indicator circuits. LED replacement globes are fitted only where they are designed as direct replacements and meet the same requirements as the original lamps (ADR 51/00), with packaging stating road use and ADR compliance. Some vehicles monitor globe circuits, so suitability is checked before fitting.

Check suitability
The lamps or globes, and the circuit they will be connected to, are checked before fitting.

Relay and fuse
Power for driving lamps is taken through a fuse and relay suited to the load, with the trigger taken from high beam.

Mount and aim
Lamps are mounted and aimed to suit the vehicle so the light does not reflect off the vehicle into the driver’s eyes. Where suitable, the aim is also checked at night.

Are light bars legal in NSW?
A light bar can be fitted as a driving lamp in NSW when it meets the VSI 64 requirements for driving lamps, including the limit of four driving lamps, white light, and switching off when high beam is switched off. VSI 64 does not specify a mounting height, but the light must not reflect off the vehicle into the driver’s eyes. The NSW rules, including when driving lamps can be used, are explained in our driving light guide.
Can I fit LED globes into my factory halogen headlights?
Only if the globe is designed as a direct replacement and meets the same requirements as the original lamp under ADR 51/00, with packaging stating it is for road use and ADR compliant. A halogen reflector may not focus an LED the same way, and a beam-pattern check on its own does not show that a conversion is legal. If a globe does not suit your headlights, we will tell you.
Why do my trailer lights only work sometimes?
A poor earth, at the plug or on the trailer, is a common cause. Corroded pins, a damaged socket or broken wiring can also cause intermittent faults. The plug, socket, wiring and earth path are checked to find which applies.
Will extra lights flatten my battery?
Extra lights add load, and any lamp left on can flatten a battery. Wiring through a relay with a suitable trigger, such as high beam for driving lamps, reduces the chance of lamps being left on. How work lights will be switched is discussed when the job is planned.
