Does a lithium upgrade in my van have to meet AS/NZS 3001.2?
Yes, if the work is done now. The standard has been enforceable since 18 November 2023 and covers alterations, not just new builds. In practice it means the battery must be outside the habitable area or in a sealed, externally vented enclosure, fused on the positive close to the terminal, with cells complying with AS IEC 62619.
My van will not charge while I am towing. Why?
Usually voltage drop over the long run to the van, or a smart alternator in the tow vehicle that drops output too low to charge through a plain relay. A DC-DC charger, fitted in either the vehicle or the van, resolves both.
How often should I test the breakaway battery?
Before every trip, and expect to replace a small sealed lead-acid breakaway battery every two to three years. It self-discharges while unused, and a breakaway system that cannot apply the brakes provides no protection at all.
